Here is a question that obviously shows that I am a rookie player and luthier
I think the difference between light and medium strings is that light requires
less tension to achieve the same tuning.

When would one use one type over the other etc. Are there different tones?
Playability.

thanks as usual
Andy

That's right, yeah.

They'll sound different, and different guitars will react to string sets differently. Sometimes they want heavier strings, that drive the top harder, sometimes they'll work better with lighter strings. Too heavy, and they may 'choke' the top somewhat. Some guitars are built lighter than others, and will require lighter string sets.

I will experiment with gages on some guitars. I will use light trebles or medium bass if there is too much bass.
